Ammonia, chloramines, and what they mean for Canton homes
Canton is served by a municipal water system in Fulton County, about 25 miles southwest of our East Peoria base. When we test water in Canton homes, the ammonia and chloramine readings consistently come in among the highest we see anywhere in our service area. That profile has direct implications for filtration — and for what a standard carbon filter can and cannot address.
Chloramines form when ammonia combines with chlorine during the disinfection process. They are more stable in the distribution system than free chlorine, which is why utilities use them, but they are significantly harder to remove. A standard pitcher or refrigerator filter is not adequate. Quality carbon contact time is required, and for drinking water, a certified reverse osmosis system is the most reliable solution we offer for Canton households.

Canton's water consistently tests among the highest in our service area for combined ammonia and chloramine concentration. Chloramines require dedicated carbon filtration with sufficient contact time to reduce effectively. Chloramine Taste and Odor
The chemical taste and smell associated with highly chloraminated water is more pronounced in Canton than in most communities we serve. Whole-home carbon filtration addresses this throughout the house. An RO system at the drinking tap removes residuals that whole-home carbon may not fully reduce at Canton's concentration levels.
Hardness
Canton water carries hardness typical of Central Illinois municipal supplies. While not at the extreme levels seen in Pekin or Creve Coeur, hardness in the very hard range still causes scale buildup on water heaters, dishwashers, and fixtures over time. A demand-initiated softener sized to your household water use addresses it throughout the whole home.
Disinfection Byproducts
Disinfection byproducts form when the chemicals used to treat water react with organic matter in the source. At Canton's chloramine levels, the formation of certain DBPs is a relevant consideration for drinking water. A certified RO system at the tap is effective at reducing a broad range of disinfection byproducts.
